Adobe releases Flash to HTML5 converter

By Hayley Tsukayama

Adobe has announced its release of Wallaby, a drag-and-drop tool used to convert the company's Flash files into HTML 5. The program is available to developers through Adobe's Labs Web site. According to the company's release notes for the program, users can view the output file in one of the supported browsers or on an iOS device. The company also notes that not all of the features of Flash Professional are supported in HTML5.

Wallaby allows developers to take the converted files and use editing applications or make modifications by hand. The program, an Adobe AIR application, was tested with iOS 4.2. The only supported Webkit browsers at this time are Chrome and Safari on OSX, Windows and iOS.

Flash and Apple have a contentious history, and iOS devices do not natively support the proprietary format used for much of the Web's online video. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs made no secret of his disdain for the platform when he announced the launch of the first iPad and wrote an open letter outlining his issues with Flash in April 2010.
